Toho my perspective of madness

Sat Jun 27, 2009, 3:18 PM
I like most of you am a huge Godzilla fan but not of the company that owns his likeness. Toho was an established film company before the wwII incidents and remains today, but their claim to fame is non other than, You guessed it GODZILLA!! Well the series from 1954 to 1974 was well done and a new opponent each film but in the late 80's and through the 90's the people of Toho decided that everything that happened to Godzilla from 1955 to 74 was not relevant and cast aside and a new age of stupidity was ushered in especially in the case of Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah , in which Ghidorah is no longer a creature from another galaxy but is a genetically alter animal from the future put on the same island as godzillasaurus and the radiation fused the things into ghidorah.
Again is the same for Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2 which isn't all that bad except for Toho turning rodan into a bis WUSS! SO i ask you this is Toho run by idiots or by a bunch of chimpanzees who bang on typewriters you be the judge?

Yeah they've made some pretty bad decisions when it comes to Godzilla over the last ten years or so. Seems like they keep rehashing the same thing over and over. I'd like to see some new monsters now and then, instead of just Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, and Mothra.

Toho, in all seriousness, is run by stubborn old men and lawyers. They're giant monster department was behind the times when it came to making movies and it showed. While Final Wars tried it's best and was pretty phenominal effects-wise, it was too little too late. Disasters like Godzilla vs Megaguirus and Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla are some good examples of when things go horribly horribly wrong. The concepts may have potential but the delivery is atrocious. While I love and respect the power of the suit, there are times when the suit cannot convey something realistically and keep the suspention of disbelief. That's where CGI, in all its dazzling glory, comes into play. Toho has dropped the ball on this several times and seems to have taken a pouty stance on it since they can't do it very well themselves. On top of that they insist-much like Hollywood-on rehashing the same formulas over and over again. They figure as long as one of the following: King Ghidorah, Mothra, Mechagodzilla; are in a film it will make money regardless of how inane or absurd the plot is. They refuse to move on and work to make it better; since they can't, they gave up.

In the mean time their lawyers are fighting a losing battle with the public of the entire planet; their goal being to keep Godzilla out of public domain. Toho sees this as protecting their property, I see it has an old man scaring vets off with a shotgun so they can't care for his crippled dog; its assinine. Further more, they continuely piss off their fans by keeping an iron grip on any wide spread fan media. GFan couldn't show fanart as much as they used to, YouTube got slapped for music videos...the list goes on. You can't even parody Godzilla without the dickheads trying to skin you alive.

In truth I'm shocked that they haven't tried taking on K-samurai who is quite possibly the most well known Kaiju artist on the web.

If that ever happens I wonder who will strike the hardest...the purists or the die-hard fans sticking up for one of their own.

Aside from the films lacking since Ishiro Honda's work I am not worried. He wanted to end the series with "Destroy All Monsters," so ignore the rest or take it with a grain of salt. Personally though, aside from Ishiro Honda's work, the rest should be forgotten. The fanbase has grown to ravenous and large, and Toho releases inferior work that the mainstream hates and fans debate over.

So true. BTW, I'd go for the chimp theory. At least then they'll produce the entire works of Shakespeare! ;)

All you have to do to know my feelings about Toho is read my journal about Toho, they turned down the idea for a Godzilla vs Gamera movie, keeps rebooting the Godzilla series, and thinks that Godzilla is their only good monster and all of the others are second bananna

I agree wholeheartedly.

This is one reason I love Final Wars so much. It's not for everyone, but you can tell the crew LIKED making it! It was made by a long-time fan, and it deviated far from the norm, while also somehow playing every Godzilla trope ever straight as an arrow.

Toho is THE textbook evil corporation. You really have no obligation to appreciate the material they give you, seeing as how they don't display a shred of appreciation for the business you, as a fan, give them.

Now, personally, I liked some of the Heisei era. The 90's King Ghidorah appeals to me, in its own way. It seems to fit him in some bizarre way....

Still, I agree, they made a LOT of bad decisions for no other reason than to rake in extra profit. They really have no one to blame but themselves for the whole GINO disaster. Don't want them to make their own monster for their movie? Don't jack up the prices for the monsters YOU are selling them!

The problem with it is, they refuse to deviate, or let fans express themselves in ANY way! No experimentation, no new gimmicks, no branching out...

This is why I think it's best if the fandom puts its effort into their OWN kaiju franchises instead of trying to further improve one that the owners wouldn't let anyone touch with a fifty foot pole.

So agree, if they want to show off those three, then give them their own movies, like they did with mothra in the 90's

KS and his legion have zeal, but Toho has money. Neither one can do shit to the other though unless KS buys the rights for a comic adaption and out does them in story telling and artwork or He sells so much of his fanwork that they actually dein to notice him and sue him. Toho is after people who are either making money off their icons or are generating widespread media without their consent (like the YouTube fan videos).
